after getting my new job and before getting my new apartment i was commuting from salem, massachusetts into work in boston. i got to ride a train twice a day along with the subway and a couple miles of walking, but the highlight was surely the train ride. i would sketch the people on the train, or read about how to layout a newspaper (as it's one of my duties as the ad and layout designer at the newspaper). this one happened to be the one-thirty-eight to boston from salem on the first of october. it actually happened to be my day off and i was going into to boston to look at apartments.

after really committing to this style i've fallen in love with it. i'm getting very quick with it and can sketch in illustrator now without even a pencil sketch to work from. and it's so much fun. it really is just like i sketch, too. i hardly use definitive lines in pencil and i draw with a mechanical pencil so i often use two or three lines of the same width to shape a line's weight and variation. i really enjoy doing that with illustrator.

Simple but very nice. I especially like the story behind it because I vaguely remember how unhappy you were in AZ?

Congrats on the move + have a fantastic weekend!

Curious about who this Tanake Trang is?
ha ha, glad to know you were paying attention. thanks for the congratulations. i am much more content here. the weather is wonderful, the scenery is beautiful and the trains are fantastic.

dig the style, don't get creepy on the commuter rail though, coloring in someone doing soduku or whatever

um... every artist i know throughout history (and that i've met and spent time with) has drawn from what they see and what they know... maybe i don't understand what you mean.

but thanks. it's good to hear from you again.

Thank you, I'm actually more wary of my colors than anything else.

Of course. How could I possibly? So glad you didn't waste your time trying to redeem your artistic merit here, but instead acting like I'm an idiot.

yeah? well i think you've nailed it...
i know what you mean though, colours can be tricky, and that's one of the reasons i draw in b&w a lot. but they do add a lot to the emotion and mood of the piece :)
